The Pillow Size Guide

Throw pillows come with their own criteria in order to make a space come together. They make any sofa, chair, or bed a more inviting and colorful place. The first and most important step when it comes to choosing throw pillows is making sure they are the correct size. You want pillows that fit the space, making sure they are not too overpowering or too small for the space. You want the pillows to impact the room without them being too much. Next, we learn how to pair the pillows by layering different sizes. The largest pillow should always be the anchor in the back and the smaller pillows and lumbars should always be in the front. I like to have the two anchor pillows on the left and right side of the sofa to be the same. Then the pillows in front of each can be different. Layering helps bring in patterns and colors that define the overall space.

In the living room, throw pillows are essential. For chairs, one lumbar pillow that is 20-22” is suggested for a complete look. On a sofa, nook, or bench a back pillow is typically 20-22” and a smaller pillow 18-20”. Layering helps bring in patterns and colors that define the overall space. Another option is the back pillow and a lumbar pillow in the front for a different layering look.

Now in the bedroom, with a few different bed sizes, pillow sizes are very important and the number of pillows you put on the bed. For a twin bed, there are two options. The first is a single lumbar or a 22” back pillow and a front lumbar. Depending on the look you are trying to achieve, both are great options.

For a full bed, the two options are similar to a twin bed. With two 24” pillows in the back and a long lumber in the front or just one long lumbar in front to complete a more simple look. Now for the larger bed options, both queen and king beds can be dressed the same way. The first option is 24-26” pillows in the back with a lumbar in the middle then completed with 20-22” in the front. For the second look, 24-26” pillows in the back with an extra-long lumbar in the front. For the last look, a large lumbar or headboard pillow would create a simple look.

Whether you are trying to brighten up a space, tie in all of the colors in a room, or wanting to add some texture to your space, throw pillows are a key element when it comes to design. You can tone a sofa, bed, or chair up or down depending on the way you go with your pillows. We hope this helps with your throw pillow designs!
